At the beginning of the week I attended the Making Things Happen conference in the lovely little southern town of Chapel Hill, NC. When I purchased my ticket about 6 months ago, I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I just knew it was a conference I had wanted to attend for years and I knew that anything that involved Lara Casey and Emily Ley was going to be phenomenal. I suppose I went to gain some clarity about goal setting and how to appropriately create the action steps to make that goal happen. I think that’s something a lot of us struggle with because it’s so easy to see this huge goal in front of us, get overwhelmed, and then get defeated. So Making Things Happen was gonna help me make those goals happen!
Well, now that I’ve returned I can tell you that it’s much more than that! While, yes, day 2 is focused on goal setting and action steps, it goes much deeper than just your business goals. I’ve walked away with some personal and business goals, and really really focusing on what matters most.
I’m going to be completely transparent here… for far too long I’ve poured myself into my work 24/7 and at the expense of my family. I’ve had some boundaries set in place, and they remain strong for a week or two and then they slowly go back to absolutely no time management and I find myself answering emails at midnight, or in our facebook group the moment I open my eyes in the morning. Friends, I don’t want to live like that anymore, and it’s my hope that you don’t want me to either. I can’t be my best for my clients if I’m not the best I can be for my family.
Believe me, I know most of you struggle a lot with this as well. Most of us are work at home moms and we squeeze our work into nap times and just about any other time we possibly can. But I want to encourage you to set some boundaries on your time… whatever that looks like for you! I’m guilty of working the hours I have set for myself, and then when I get off, I still find myself checking the email on my phone while my daughter is talking and I have no idea what she’s talking about. Anyone with me here?
Through this conference, I’ve realized that my “What matters most” is my family! My daughter is almost 8 and my son is almost 3. This time is precious. I won’t ever get it back with them. And neither will you with your children! NOW is the time to make some changes in your life to truly focus on the “What Matters Most”!
SO, WHAT AM I DOING TO MAKE MY “WHAT MATTERS MOST” HAPPEN?
I am first and foremost setting some work hours for myself. Those are the hours I am at my computer and getting work done. Outside of those hours are time with my family. I plan to work Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday from 10:00-4:00CST and Tuesday from 10:00-12:00CST and then have a Mommy/Daughter date day with my daughter every single week. A time where it’s just her and I and she has my full, undivided attention. I’m specifically writing this out for all to see so that you will all hold me accountable! Deal?!
That is just one of the primary things I’m taking away from this conference. I do have some other personal and business goals I’ve set for myself, but I wanted to share this part specifically because I know so many of us struggle with this. I’m now seeing how important such a simple step can transform my own life and the lives of my little loves who just want time with their mommy.
The MTH conference really covered so much more than this, but truly it has to be something you experience to know it all. If you’ve heard about this conference and have wanted to go registration has just opened up for the Nov. 2-3 dates so you should really check it out! If you’ve never heard of this conference, I highly suggest you go here and check it out.
I’m so thankful for this wonderful group of people who are using their gifts and strengths and encouraging so many women like myself to live a fulfilling life and focus on what matters most!
I also want to share a little, yet profound story of my time at this conference….
On Monday morning, I walked down from my room, grabbed a cup of coffee, and then hesitantly dropped my phone into a box knowing I wouldn’t get it back until the end of the day. There was another woman that walked up at the same time and she was having some major anxiety about dropping her phone in that box too. Come on… you know you would too?!
I walked in, grabbed a seat, and this lady came up and we began chatting about basic things. Why was she at this conference? Why was I there? Where was she from? Where was I from?
The entire time we were talking, I noticed a small tattoo on her left forearm of the word “Joy” that looked awfully familiar. I eventually asked her what her tattoo said and what it meant. When she showed me I nearly fell on the floor. I gasped and said… “Did you find that in the Cuptakes app?”. She looked at me a little puzzled and began to tell me how she actually found it on Pinterest. I then told her that it was actually from an app called Cuptakes and that I was actually the creator of it. I believe my words to her were “You’re not going to believe this, but that is my handwriting tattooed on your arm.”. She was speechless to say the least. Thus began a long conversation about the meaning of it, and how it all came to be.
I began to find out that over 3 years ago, she was searching for the word “Joy” on Pinterest and found the Cuptakes wallpaper design with the word on there. She printed it out and stuck it on her bathroom mirror until she was brave enough to go and get it tattooed on her arm. She had actually had a designer add a few more things around the word to be more of a seal, but when she went to get it done, she could only go as far as the word. She also told me how the word “Joy” was her life word after her son was born with some severe disabilities (the main reason for her anxiety about dropping her phone in that box!). After feeling incredibly defeated and just overwhelmed at the obstacles in front of her, she was having a conversation with one of her sons doctors. Here are the words directly from her blog.
He said,”One of the greatest things in life for a person to experience is JOY. It doesn’t matter weather you have an IQ of 50 or 250, you are capable. And if you experience JOY, you have had a successful life. This baby is capable of experiencing JOY because he has a loving family. We as a family will experience JOY because of this baby.” I left his office that day and got in my car to write down his words. And with that said we as a family have adopted this philosophy and it’s has made such a difference in our outlook.
Who would have thought that almost 4 years ago when I opened illustrator and wrote out the word “Joy” for a Cuptakes design that it would have a such profound impact on someone else’s life as well as my own now. And what are the odds that I’m sitting there at a conference in the middle of NC and this very woman is one of the only people I have a full conversation with. The odds are astronomical like.. one in a bajillion!
I’m still praying about what it all means exactly and really listening to what the Lord has for me through this situation. But one thing I do know.. is that even if you think you’re doing something so meaningless, you really are doing something profound. If it touches one persons life, then it’s enough. If you’re feeling defeated like I have been lately, know you are worth it! You’re worth it and your gifts and talents are worth being shared with the world! You just have to actually make them happen!
And last but certainly not least… I got to finally hug this girls neck! Courtney and I have known each other for 5 years now, have gone through pregnancies together, and had two precious little boys about a month apart who are now 2.5 years old! Courtney has also been my assistant here at Restored 316 for the last year. While we work together, she is also one of my dearest friends and I am so thankful for the time we had together! I love you girl!
Thank you for hanging in there and reading this entire post. My hope is that you’ve been encouraged! Now go and make what matters most happen!
